Emporia, Kansas is the founding city of Veterans Day! U.S. Representative Ed Rees from Emporia, Kansas, presented a bill establishing the holiday through Congress. President Dwight Eisenhower, also from Kansas, signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954.

Merriam Visitors Bureau was one of the first CVB’s to utilize Geocaching as a tourism activity in the City. Geocaching is a virtual treasure hunt using a GPS enabled device. Today, Merriam hosts four geocaches throughout the city, including two near Merriam’s downtown corridor and over 500 lucky seekers have found the hidden caches.

Mounted shooting uses black powder theatrical blanks with no bullet. These blanks were originally used in movie production and on the theatrical stage so that flame and smoke can be seen from the muzzle of the firearm. This burning powder will break a balloon out to approximately twenty feet.
